Exhibition Opening: 2012 Waponahki Student Art Show
Abbe Museum Downtown, Bar Harbor, Maine

A collaboration of Miane Indian Education and the Abbe Museum. The Waponahki Student Art Show brings together a wonderful variety of art created by Native American students from early childhood education through high school. Using a wide array of media, these young artists incorporate traditional beliefs and values with the modern, multi-cultural world around them. 

Exhibit runs through October 2012 in the Abbe Museum's Community Gallery.

Children's Ash basket workshop with Pam Cunningham, Penobscot
Abbe Museum Downtown, Bar Harbor, Maine

Children ages 6-18 will learn how to weave a simple ash basket with a sweetgrass rim, known as a candy basket or trinket basket. Pam will start the baskets, and children will learn how to weave the ash around a mold, and create a rim. Children will leave with a basket of their own creation that will last them a lifetime. Annual Native American Festival & Basketmakers Market
College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine

Co-sponsored by the Abbe Museum, the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance, and the College of the Atlantic, the festival is considered Maine's largest annual gathering of Native American artists. Meet the artists while learning about and purchasing Wabanaki baskets, carvings, beadwork, dolls, and other handmade items. The day-long event includes Native music, dance, storytelling, craft demonstrations, and food.

Visit members of the Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance at the Common Ground Country Fair. Brown ash and sweetgrass basketry and traditional arts will be offered for sale, and drumming and demonstrations will run throughout the weekend.

Maine Indian Basketmakers Sale & Demonstration
Hudson Museum, University of Maine, Orono, Maine

This event features Maliseet, Micmac, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot basketmakers who sell their handmade, one of a kind, ash splint and sweetgrass basketry. Work baskets, such as creels, pack and potato baskets and fancy baskets ranging from strawberry and blueberry shaped baskets to curly bowls may be found along with quill jewelry, wood carvings and birchbark work. Demonstrations of brown ash pounding, basket making and other native arts, as well as traditional drumming, dancing and singing will be presented.
